Editor

Layers, variables, media, shapes, effects, conditions and triggers

The editor has five areas: on the left the tabs Layers, Variables, Media and Settings (plus Ventoview bot for the chat bot and Shortcuts for the Shortcuts module), in the middle the canvas, on the right the properties of the selected layer and at the bottom the timeline.

The open tab sits at the bottom with its name and merges into the area, the others are above it as small icon boxes – hovering shows their name. Next to the “Layers” tab are the tools Open all / Close all (groups), Select all, Deselect and ✦ Effects; when the column is narrow they move closer, get short names and finally end up in the “⋯” menu.

Layers

LayerWhat for
TextAny text with variables, e.g. Time: {zeit}. Colors inside text with [farbe=#ff0000]red[/farbe].
Image / VideoYour own files (Media tab) or images from modules. Alt while dragging the handles crops. Shape: rectangle (corners also individually), circle/oval, hexagon, diamond, triangle, star, heart. Frame with width, color and style (line, dashes, dots, double) follows the shape. Blur: as many on top of each other as you like (“+ Blur”) – whole, edge (sharp center), one side (top/bottom/left/right with reach), focus point (sharp circle around a point) or tilt-shift (sharp band). Each with strength, softness and “Invert”.
SoundPlays from its start in the timeline. Invisible in the overlay.
PanelRectangle with color, gradient, corners and frame – e.g. as a background. “Outline only” (next to the frame color) makes the panel transparent.
Shape15 shapes (star, ring, arc, arrow, heart, speech bubble, wave …) with their own controls such as spikes, thickness or arc angle. “Outline only” exists here too.
GroupFolder for several layers, available in every editor. Select layers and click “Group” (Ctrl+G) – or drag layers onto the group in the list. Clicking an element selects the whole group: moving, aligning, copying, hiding and deleting then apply to all. Just one element: double-click on the canvas or click in the list. Ctrl+Shift+G or “Ungroup” dissolves it again. Under “Transform” the group has its own position, width/height %, rotation and opacity – they affect everything inside without changing the layers themselves (a layer taken out is back to how it was). Like a layer, the group also has effects (they apply to all matching layers inside, e.g. audio effects only to sound/video) and keyframes: ◆ on any value or “+ Keyframe track” for opacity, offset, size, rotation and the effect sliders. Its tracks run over the full length of the design.
TemplateEmbeds a whole saved design (Link module).
Bar, visualizer, confetti, frameCome with modules (Music, Stream-Chat, Alerts, Frames …) and only appear in that module’s editor or as soon as the module is a data source.
ListShows the latest entries of a list below each other – the Stream-Chat, the most recently pressed keys (Basic) or any other list of a module (under “Source”). Newest at the top or bottom, with amount and display time. “Per line s” sets how long each line stays – counted from the newest: “3, 2, 0.5” = newest 3 s, above it 2 s, at the very top 0.5 s. “Example” are lines only visible in the editor while there's no real data.

On the canvas

  • Move: drag. The layer snaps to the edges and centers of the canvas and other layers (pink guides). Alt = no snapping.
  • Size: with the handles. Corners scale the font of text along, images keep their aspect ratio (Shift = free).
  • Rotate: round handle at the top, Shift = 15° steps.
  • Scale % (on the right under “Position & size”, slider + number): makes the whole layer with content, frame and effects bigger or smaller – around its center, without changing width, height or font size. Double-click the slider = 100 %. With ◆ also as a keyframe track (e.g. react to value).
  • Overlapping layers: a click selects the top one. Ctrl + click on the same spot selects the next one below – every further Ctrl-click goes one deeper. A selected layer stays selected while dragging, even if another one lies above it.
  • Select several: Shift + click (in the layer list also Ctrl + click) or draw a box over the empty canvas. Then move, align or distribute them evenly together.
  • Lock direction: above the canvas Free / ↔ / ↕ – or Alt + G cycles through them (free → only sideways → only up/down → free). Shift while dragging uses the main direction.
  • Resize areas: drag the dividers between the areas, double-click resets them. The left column is at least 250 px wide.
  • Zoom: Alt + mouse wheel – towards the mouse. The percentage above the canvas fits it again. A zoom you set yourself stays, even when you make a column wider – the picture stays in place.
  • Pan the zoomed canvas: mouse wheel, Shift + mouse wheel or drag with the middle mouse button. If not everything is visible, the canvas has a subtle purple edge all around.
  • Only visible things can be clicked: layers that aren't active at the current time (timing, condition, trigger) can't be clicked on the canvas – in the layer list and the timeline they can.
  • Layers outside the canvas can also be grabbed next to it and dragged back.

Grid

Above the canvas “Grid” (key G). Two kinds:

  • px: fixed cell size in pixels, e.g. 20.
  • Divide: split the canvas into equal cells – number side by side × stacked. 2 × 1 gives a line exactly in the middle, 3 × 3 thirds. While dragging, the left edge, the center or the right edge snaps to the nearest line.

With the grid, the handles also snap when resizing, Shift + arrow key jumps to the next grid line, Alt briefly turns snapping off.

Variables

The “Variables” tab lists all values of your modules. A click puts the variable into the selected text – or creates a new one. Under “Settings → Data sources” you add more modules so their variables are available in the design. You create your own variables in the app under “Keywords”.

Conditions

Every layer and every group can have conditions – built like logic in code:

  • Condition: variable, comparison, value – e.g. {cputemp} greater than 80. Comparisons: is, is not, is one of, is none of, contains, greater/less than, at least/at most.
  • AND / OR: between two entries is the link – a click switches it. AND = all must match, OR = one is enough.
  • Block ( ): groups conditions in brackets, with its own AND/OR inside. Blocks can be nested.
  • At the top a line shows how the editor reads it, e.g. (type = sub AND months > 3) OR (type = giftsub).
  • Groups: their conditions apply to all layers inside – in addition to their own. That way you switch many layers at once.

Keyframes and reacting values

Next to every number field of a layer there's a ◆: a click creates a keyframe track for this value. It runs over time, follows a dial or reacts to a live value (music, temperature, chat …). Everything about it: Timeline & keyframes and React to value.

Timing and animations

Under “Timing” you decide whether a layer is always visible or only from–to. For showing and hiding there are fade, slide, zoom, wipe in all directions, from the center, circle, blur, pop, spin in, drop and open up. For your own progressions: keyframes.

Effect library

At the far right of the layers, “✦ Effects” opens a column right next to the layers (the canvas moves aside). At the top a search, below it the tabs Favorites and All, with the sections All · Audio · Image · Animation:

  • Image: black & white, sepia, hue, saturation, contrast, invert (negative), light ↔ dark (flip brightness, colors stay), glow, shadow, aura (pulsing), outline, light, vignette (image/video), fade out (gradient) and blur gradient – direction in degrees, start, length and curve (even, fast first or slow first).
  • Animation: wobble, pulse, double pulse, float, swing, spin, flicker, rainbow, glitch – they run constantly. With “Seamless” (left of the volume) they don't jump back at the end of the loop.
  • Audio (sound and video): muffled (low-pass), telephone (high-pass), echo, reverb, distortion, stereo. The reverb has wet (reverb) and dry (original) separately, length, pre-delay, softness (bright to muffled), bass cut, decay and stereo width. Audio effects are also included in video and WAV exports.
  • ☆ on the left of a card makes the effect a favorite.
  • Effect packs from the hub (dashed frame) apply several effects at once, e.g. “VHS tape”.
  • The trash can on hover removes an effect or pack from the list – you can get it back in the hub. Layers already using it keep it.
  • “More in the hub” opens more effect packs.

Drag an effect onto a layer or group in the list – or select layers or a group and click “+”. On a group the effect stays with the group and applies to all matching layers inside without changing them. It then appears indented below the layer; on the right in the properties you adjust it, turn it off or change the order. ◆ next to a slider creates a keyframe track, e.g. black & white from 0 to 100 % over two seconds or the echo via a MIDI dial.

Swap an effect: the name at the top of the card is a selection – another effect of the same category replaces it, matching controls keep their value and keyframes. Unlock an area (lock in the card, for image effects): the effect then only works inside a rectangle – X, Y, width, height (and a soft edge for filters), all animatable with ◆. With “Follow element” the area moves and scales with the element (values in % of its size) – e.g. black & white only on the lower half of an image, which stays that way when you move or resize the image. Without it the area stays fixed on the canvas. On the canvas a dashed frame shows the area: drag the tab = move, drag the corner = size.

Effects

  • Visible % with wipe direction and soft edge – cuts the layer off like a wipe, ideal with a keyframe track.
  • Blur for the whole layer.

Triggers

Under “Settings → Triggers” you create rules, e.g. “noob 3× in 10 s”, “!hype” in chat or a shortcut. Layers you assign to a trigger only appear when it applies – their timing counts from then. “Preview” plays it in the editor, “Test in chat” also in your streaming software. Shortcuts have their own tab – see Shortcuts.

With the Basic module there are also key press and mouse click (from the key display): every new entry of that kind triggers, “Only for” limits it to certain keys (comma-separated, empty = any).

Triggered animations

Every element – layer or group – can have its own animations: as an in or out animation in Timing or started by a condition while the timeline keeps running as usual.

  • Create: on the right under “Triggered animations” or with the lightning bolt in the element’s timeline row.
  • Edit: “Open timeline” shows a timeline just for this animation, from 0 s to its length (in the field at the top where “Loop length” usually is). Loop range, grid, zoom and inserting time work as usual. With ◆ next to every value you add tracks. It looks and works like the normal timeline: the element as a row (the arrow expands its tracks), the bar is the animation – dragging the right edge changes the length, the left one cuts off the start. Everything else stays as it looks right now. “Done” takes you back. Copied or from the library, position, rotation and size move along to the new element.
  • Start: on a trigger (chat word, command, shortcut, key press, mouse click …), when a variable changes, when a condition is met – or “without trigger”, only as in/out.
  • In/out: for elements that aren’t “always visible”, choose an animation of the element or one from the library under “In” or “Out” in Timing. Its length is then the duration. For groups it’s in their “In/out” section – their time runs from the first to the last layer.
  • Together with the timeline: if the timeline animates the same value, both act: opacity and size are multiplied, offset, rotation and blur added. Fields like font size and effect controls are taken over by the animation. After it ends, everything glides back softly to the normal value within “Return” (seconds). If the trigger comes again, it starts over.
  • Copy and paste: “Copy” on the animation, then select another element and press Ctrl+V (or “Paste” at the lightning bolt). If something doesn’t work – e.g. font size on an image – you get a message and nothing changes. Otherwise a window shows what gets animated, which effects are added and whether it is used as in, out or on a trigger.
  • Rename and delete: the name is at the top of the animation (on the right). The trash can there – or “Delete” in the bolt menu – removes it together with its keyframes; if it was chosen as in or out, no transition is set there afterwards.

“Animations” library: the button with the lightning bolt next to “✦ Effects” at the layers. It holds ready-made animations from Ventoview (fade in, pop in, fly in, pulse, wiggle, light up …) and your own – with search, favorites and the filters In · Out · On trigger. Drag onto an element or click “+” to insert. Save your own with “Save” on an animation (name and what it is meant for); they are stored in the app and work for all designs (Ventoview app 0.0.4 or newer). You delete your own ones there with the trash can.

Example: the Basic template “Keys & mouse” – “Fade out (gradient)” with its own area lies over the bottom line, an animation makes the new line appear softly on every key (keyboard and mouse separately).

Repeat and hide

Under “Settings” modules offer ready-made behaviors, e.g. “Once per alert” (the design plays once per event, several one after another) or “Hide when nothing is playing”.

Testing

When nothing is selected, the right side has two pages: Design and Test. Under Test you play through what can happen in the stream. Only tests that fit the design are shown – for the editor's module or a data source (e.g. shortcuts only if Shortcuts is included). The middle then becomes the test window: the real overlay runs there just as it appears in the stream.

  • Chat message: name and text, e.g. !elo. Appears in the chat overlay, fires word and command triggers, and the chat bot shows what it would reply (if you want, it really writes).
  • Stream event: follow, sub, resub (months), gift subs (amount), bits (amount), raid (viewers), channel points – with name, tier and message.
  • Shortcut: fire any shortcut from the app with a click.
  • Test values: set any variable to a test value, e.g. rank or CPU temperature – only in the editor, to check conditions and texts.
  • Quick tests of the modules (formerly under Settings).

Events run through the app like real ones – also in your streaming software. Test values only apply in the editor and are gone after reloading.

Templates

“Templates” at the top shows the module's templates – the default templates and everything you've taken from the hub. On hover, × removes a template from the list (default templates are only hidden). “More in the hub” opens the hub right at this module's templates – that's also where you get removed ones back. You start an empty design with “New”.

Media

The “Media” tab holds the images, videos and sounds of the modules and your own (upload, drag onto the canvas – then straight as a layer – or drag from the PC onto the “Media” tab – then only into your media). Each section can be collapsed via its heading. Sounds show their name, a waveform and a round ▶ button to preview (only one at a time). The volume for this is set with the 🔊 slider on the right above the timeline.

Saving

“Save” (Ctrl+S) stores the design in the app. With the selection field at the top you open saved designs, “New” starts an empty one. To pass it on: Sharing templates.
